About FOKUS
FOKUS – Forum for Women and Development - is a knowledge and resource centre on international gender issues. It is an umbrella organisation for 43 organisations in Norway. The overall objective is to promote women’s human rights and gender equality globally. This necessitates strengthening women’s access to rights, resources and power, which FOKUS seeks to achieve through advocacy and international development cooperation.
WHO WE ARE
FOKUS was established in 1995. Today the organisation consists of 43 Norwegian women's organisations, groups and forums in political parties, trade unions, and solidarity and aid organisations.
FOKUS receives financial support from the Norwegian Agency for Development (NORAD), the Norwegian Association of Lawyers, the Grieg foundation, the Norwegian Union of Municipal and General Employees, the Norwegian Union of Social Educators and Social Workers and monthly donors.
FOKUS governing structure and organisation consists of an annual member assembly, a board (elected by the annual assembly) and a secretariat in Norway, with a country office in Colombia.
Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mette-Marit is FOKUS’ patron.
WHAT WE DO
FOKUS’ vision is a world based on gender equality and equity, where women’s human rights are respected and protected and where everybody has equal access to participation regardless of gender.
Gender discrimination, poverty and marginalization are human rights violations. In partnership with local organizations in seven countries in Africa and Latin America, and together with international networks, FOKUS seeks to increase women’s access to rights, resources and power.
From 2022-2026, FOKUS will strive to:
- Reduce violence against women and girls.
- Strengthen the overall sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and girls.
- Protect women’s economic rights and participation in legislation, working life and private sector business ventures.
- Ensure that women’s rights are protected in all phases of crises and conflicts.
- Draw more attention to, concentrate on and strengthen the inclusion of the gender perspective in work to combat climate change.
- Ensure that gender equality is a priority in Norwegian foreign policy, international development policy and aid.
